I'm looking to buy a trans for my 924s. A guy I'm talking to says he has one out of a 1986 944, that is limited slip. I didn't know they made this trans for that car. Can anyone tell me if this is true? If so, what kinda price would be reasonable? The car it came out of had 90,000 miles. Thanks

The 86 Turbo Transaxle was produced with LSD (Limited Slip Differential). On top of the bell housing on the Transaxle is a flat spot that has the build date code - date code stamped runs from front to back on top of the flat spot on the very top of that bell housing. The 86 turbo Transaxle with a date code stamped starting with Alpha Numeral of 5P is the open differential and sell for 300 to 500 normally. The 86 Turbo Transaxle with a Alpha Numeral of 5R is a LSD (Limited slip). The whole number there may look like 5R19026 - where as the code 5R is LSD and the19026 refers to build date of
19th day of February , 1986 - 19 02 6 - If one finds a good LSD transaxle they are usually in the range of $800 to $2500 it is a good deal. The $2500.00 price usually refers to a Turbo "S" transaxle with the code of "AOR" as it had many strength upgrades from other versions.

See also Clark's Garage Work shop Manual - under transaxles for a full list of build date codes for all of the models - this may help in your purchase as you can then tell exactly which transaxle it is.
